Planning a getaway? Exciting, right? But before you start picturing yourself on a sun-drenched beach or exploring a bustling city, there’s a crucial piece of preparation you absolutely can’t overlook: your ID. Specifically, we’re talking about the REAL ID Act and how it might impact your travel plans.
Starting May 7, 2025 (as of this post date), the federal government will require passengers to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights. That means if your current driver’s license doesn’t meet the REAL ID requirements, you could be denied boarding – a travel disaster no one wants!
What is REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in response to the 9/11 attacks to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. These standards are designed to improve the security and integrity of federal identification.
How Do I Know If My License is REAL ID Compliant?
Look for a small star in the upper right-hand corner of your driver’s license. If you see it, you’re good to go! If you don’t see the star, your license is not REAL ID compliant, and you’ll need to take action.
What Do I Need to Do If My License Isn’t REAL ID Compliant?
You’ll need to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or the equivalent in your state to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license. Be prepared to bring the necessary documentation, which typically includes:
- Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate, passport)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card)
- Proof of residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement)
Check your state’s DMV website for specific requirements and documentation you’ll need to bring. Don’t wait until the last minute – lines at the DMV can be long, and you don’t want to risk missing your trip!
What If I Already Have a Passport?
If you have a valid U.S. passport, you’re already covered! A passport is an acceptable form of identification for domestic flights, even after the REAL ID enforcement date. So, if you prefer to travel with your passport, you can skip the trip to the DMV.
